In Extremo is a very special rock band, as alongside the electronic guitar, bass and drums the seven-man group from Berlin also uses medieval instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes and harp. Within the band’s sixteen-year history, In Extremo has become a fixed star in the rock firmament and on 8 December 2012 they will be giving the best of their medieval spectacle at the Rockhal.
The meteoric rise of these idealists began in the Nineties. Initially In Extremo consisted of two projects: on the one hand was the medieval part, fuelled by acoustic instruments, and on the other hand was an electronically enhanced rock aspect. The decisive flash of inspiration came in 1997, when both parts were joined together to release their first medieval rock album entitled “Weckt die Toten!”. After eight album releases, high chart places and various precious metal awards the band’s career hit its first zenith when the album “Sängerkrieg” reached number one in the German hit parade.
Inspiration for the their latest album “Sterneneisen” is the cosmos in its infinity, with its constellations and its myths, reason enough for band members to sing of their own small planets: “This star has seven points, seven sparks, seven quirks” it says in the title number. “Later we encountered the heptagram of Greek mythology, the seven-pointed star. It stands for love, wisdom and solidarity,” as Dr. Pymonte describes the symbol adorning the album cover.
“Every day on tour I’m grateful that I have such a great job,” guitarist Basti Lange says happily. Romanticism and toughness are constant travelling companions of the seven talented men, so the album title “Sterneneisen” is perfectly suited to In Extremo. Above all the new “Viva la Vida” bears witness to nights of drinking beneath a boozer’s moon, followed by morning, when the rolling drinkers’ eyes are accosted by sunlight.
For years, In Extremo have been incessantly conquering concert fortresses in Germany and around the world, and on 8 December 2012 they will be giving expression to their pulsating enthusiasm In Extremo again in Luxemburg, naturally with their famous, indeed infamous and impressive stage show.
