Ayo’s success surprised everyone, including her! One single, the very beautiful “Down on my Knees”, and that was it, all of France had fallen in love with her. After that, “Joyful”, her first album, sold more than 400,000 copies in France alone. She was also nominated for two “Victoires de la Musique” in 2007.
Ayo was born in Germany, of a Nigerian father and gypsy mother. As a youngster, she marvelled as much at the records of Pink Floyd as at those of Bob Marley or Fela Kuti. Some years later, she was to be found between New York and Paris, with guitar in hand and a bag full of demos.
It was actually in the Big Apple that she recorded “Joyful”, but it was in Paris that her career literally exploded: principally following the release of the single “Down on my Knees” a real hit on all wavelengths.
Simplicity, softness and emotion, those are the elements which Ayo slips delicately into her music. That is again the case today with the release of “Gravity at Last”, her second album intelligently conceived with the same team and in particular with Jay Newland, producer inter alia of Norah Jones.
Next January, Ayo will be offered the luxury of spending three nights in a row at the Olympia in Paris (6, 7 and 8 January) before continuing on a tour right around Europe. She will be with us on 9 February next for an evening which promises to be one of sweetness of intimacy.
