After a first single recorded in 1981, of which only 100 were pressed, the group signed with the label I.R.S. Records which then released “Murmur”, a first album well received by the critics: the magazine Rolling Stone even named it album of the year. That was in 1983.

Further albums were released and the popularity of R.E.M. continued to increase, with the huge success of the albums “Green” (1998), “Out of Time” (1991) and “Automatic for the People” (1992). From the last two albums, the group’s greatest singles were released: “Losing my Religion”, “Shiny Happy People”, “Drive”, “Man on the Moon” and “Everybody Hurts”. Despite the huge success of these two albums, R.E.M. refused to tour and awaited the release of “Monster”, the 1994 album, before doing so. Naturally it was an extremely successful tour. The years that followed, however, saw a slight change of trend and, apart from the album “New Adventures in Hi-Fi” (1996), “Up” (1998), “Reveal” (2001) and “Around the Sun” (2004), were not as fortunate.

2008: with a new world tour and a later live album, the group returns to its previous success thanks to the album “Accelerate”, an album of direct rock, intransigent with a fearsome efficiency. In the week of its release, the album went to Number 1 in the United States, in England and in a major part of Europe. An R.E.M. retakes its crown as king of alternative rock!
