HIM

Club

Three years after “Venus Doom”, the album that made HIM big in the United States, the Finns will be back in 2010 with their seventh studio album. The following world tour is also going to stop at the Rockhal on 11 March 2010!

Their singles “Join me in death” certainly was the trigger for HIM’s worldwide success. It was a singles that went on heavy rotation on all radio stations and made the public discover what the band itself used to call “love metal”.

As they were boosted by this singles, the band and their highly charismatic lead singer Ville Valo rose to unexpected fame, selling out the biggest concert halls and playing at all the greatest summer festivals. Without a doubt, they were 1999’s big revelation.

Meanwhile, four albums later, HIM have become a war machine that is more exportable than ever, reaching impressive record sales in the United States (“Dark light” in 2005 and “Venus Doom” two years later).

Rumor has it that HIM’s new album will be released on 14 February 2010, Saint Valentine’s Day. It is supposed to be named “Screamworks: Love in theory and practice”. One thing is for sure: quite a lot of fans will be eager to see Ville and his band of bad boys. So don’t forget to acquire your tickets for this concert as soon as possible!

AIRBOURNE

Club

Do four Australians who play powerful, fat rock music that smells like dry ground in the blazing sun remind you of something? Right: Airbourne are a spiritual offspring of AC/DC, and they’ll play at the Rockhal in 2010. Prepare for guitars and a band that is very willing to make you have a good time.

Police officers from Warrnambool, Australia stopped counting the times they had to stop by at the O’Keeffe’s and tell the two brothers to turn their amps down. Dozens of concerts later, the band has moved to Melbourne, rented a house and started repeating regularly and playing in almost every bar of the city.

Their first album in 2004 earned massive response from the media. The band instantly got booked for supporting shows for important bands such as the Rolling Stones and Mötley Crüe.

In 2006 things went even faster for Airbourne. They flew to the States and under the wings of Bob Marlette (Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Seether…) and Andy Wallace, they recorded “Runnin’ wild”, their second album, which was released on Roadrunner Records.

After a marathon world tour which, amongst others, sold out four times in France, the band has now returned to the studio to prepare “No guts, no glory”, their third album, which should be released in February, 2010, and which will certainly not pass unnoticed!

Stand up for rock and roll!

GREGOIRE

Club

Nobody saw this phenomenon coming: Grégoire surely is “the French artist” of the last year, with not less than 700,000 albums sold only in France. He’s been on the road since last year and will finish this tour at the Rockhal’s Club, on 28th March 2010.

His singles “Toi + Moi” probably was the most broadcast title in 2009! But nobody saw Grégoire coming. Not even the labels, because the lad self-financed himself through My Major Company and the many future producers present on this site. The main attraction of the site is that listeners finance the projects that are close to their heart.

Despite his look reminding of a melancholic poet, Grégoire is also and above all an excellent writer, composer and interpreter. His first album proves it: entitled “Toi + Moi” as well, it is still (more than a year after its release) classified among the best sales figures in France and Belgium.

After two other hit singles (“Rue des Etoiles” and “Ta main”) and a monumental tour that sold out the biggest halls of France, Grégoire now terminates his tour by giving several club concerts.

On 28th March, 2010, he will celebrate the end of his tour at our Club… with you + us + all those who want to come and all the ones who are lonely…!

DARKNESS DYNAMITE + CALLEJON + GUESTS

Club

Please note that this show is postponed to march 31.
The Good news is that it is now a double bill : Darkness Dynamite + Callejon

2009 was THE year for Darkness Dynamite. A first explosive album, shows together with such big acts like Korn, Job for a Cowboy or Bring me the Horizon as well as a gig at the Bloodstock Open Air in the UK. So come and discover then live at the Rockhal on the 31st march. Also on the line up for this night will be the German guys from Callejon.

Lately things have been going fast for this young French band which was formed only two years ago! After the release of their first EP, “Through the ashes of the wolves” in 2007, the band quickly found their new home on the label Musicast.

After this first step, they start touring. They share the stage with some of the most confirmed bands (Job of a Cowboy, Bring me the Horizon, The Chariot, etc.) and Darkness Dynamite leave a very strong impression wherever they go. At the meantime, more and more fans start accompanying them...

2008. The band is preparing their first album. The French add an enormously modern sound and a five-star production to their influences, which are deeply rooted in the last decades of metal (Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, etc.). With its catchy melodies, super heavy descents and sophisticated arrangements, “The astonishing fury of mankind” is a genuine bomb that blows Darkness Dynamite to the first division, allowing them to play as opening act for bands such as Korn and Sevendust...

The album made it to the 82nd spot of the US Top Radio Charts in June 2009 and also catapulted the band to England, where they played at the Bloodstock Open Air festival. An absolute premiere for a French band!

The 31st march will be loud and furious. And they won’t be alone on stage this night as they bring along with them Callejon, those Germans that published their last album at Nuclear Blast (« Zombieactionhauptquartier ») and which was highly acclaimed not only by fans of August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage and The Devil wears Prada.

ARCH ENEMY + SAMAEL

Club

Arch Enemy is the spearhead of the new generation of metal. Thanks to its incredible live performances, this band has seduced a very large audience. With their highly charismatic lead singer, Angela Gossow, the Swedes will come to the Rockhal on 1st April, 2010, accompanied by Samael from Switzerland! Horns high!

In 1995, Michael Amott, the former guitarist of Carcass, formed a new band: Arch Enemy. They quickly found their place in the European metal scene. The beginnings were promising, especially the album “Stigmata” – first of a very nice series released on their label, Century Media. After that, a strategic change in their line-up: in 2001, Johan Liiva, who was the singer of the band, was replaced by the cute Angela Gossow.

With only one album (“Wages of sin” in 2001), the former journalist from Germany convinced everyone. The band transcends to another level and participates in an anthology tour together with Motörhead and Slayer the same year.

In 2007, the album “Rise of the tyrant” increased the pressure a little bit more and Arch Enemy became the flagship of what’s called “metal made in Scandinavia”. Later, they teamed up with Machine Head, Dragonforce and Trivium for The Black Crusade Tour, which would lead them through Europe and a great part of the rest of the world.

In 2009, Arch Enemy released “The root of all evil”, a compilation of extracts of the three first albums which were recorded again for the occasion.
Next year comes the next part of the tour; and this time, they’ll also stop in Luxembourg.

The band will announce a guest for this tour very soon. Nevertheless, we are proud to announce already that Miles to Perdition from Luxembourg will open the concert on 1st April 2010 at the Rockhal. A just reward for this very promising band...

ROSE

Club

Please note that the concert of ROSE is postponed to 15 April. All sold tickets stay valid.

“Les souvenirs sous ma frange” is Rose’s second album. This young artist was discovered only two years ago, when she released her singles “La liste” and “Ciao Bella”. Now she comes with a new album, bringing about new success and a new tour that will finally lead her to Luxembourg.

Not only is she as pretty as a spring flower; Rose also has this soft glance which is yet full of roguishness and says a lot about her pride of having realised such a great start of a career. In 2007, this career started off with one of the most beautiful albums of the year. The two singles “La liste” and “Ciao Bella”, which are extracts of this album and were granted great acceptance on francophone radio stations.

After the surprise of an incredible success with the first, eponymous album (500,000 copies sold only in France!), Rose managed to go about the next level ahead, which already announced itself when she prepared her second work. As a matter of fact, things work out much more naturally after a pharaonic tour.

Today, we hold “Les souvenirs sous ma frange” in our hands. And straightaway, everything that we loved about Rose on her first album is present again: her incredibly talented way of writing in detail about the little moments of her life; her chords that, even after having heard them hundreds of times, sound like totally new notes. And then there is this fragility, this honesty and humanity that have been the trademark of all great artists.

Rose is a flower that has just dropped her second petal. Now it is our turn to pick it up and keep it at the bottom of our box of memories…

Be it NOFX fans or Simple Plan devotees – Sum 41 are respected by everyone as an inherent part of the American punk rock scene. In 2010, they’re coming back with a brand new album. They will surely present some of the new songs exclusively when they hit the Rockhal on 23rd April, 2010!

Sum 41 was formed in the middle of the nineties, when the band members were only 16 years old. Nevertheless, they quickly worked their way up and in the beginning of the new millennium, they were considered as the best punk rock band in both the United States and Canada, their home country.

Thanks to several genuine “knockout” albums (“All killer no filler”, “Does this look infected?” or “Chuck”) and tons of hit singles (“Fat lip”, “Still waiting”, “The hell song”, etc.) Sum 41 rapidly invaded Europe as well.

Sum 41 aren’t only unimpressible, they’re afraid of nothing! Their shows burst with energy and the setlist is full of punk rock firestarters of the kind that’s not being done anymore. They’re going to make you forget your worries in less than two hours… Don’t miss this opportunity!

24H ELECTRONIQUES: BIRDY NAM NAM + DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH? +...

Club

This year’s edition of the 24 Heures Electroniques is already the third and will be headlined by Birdy Nam Nam. As usual, during the day the festival will be dedicated to electronic music in all its varieties with a multitude of workshops and conferences.

For three years now, the 24 Heures Electroniques have become the indispensable event for fans of electronic music. There will be workshops for discovery and enhanced skills, conferences that procure all the knowledge you need… and off course, once darkness has fallen, concerts until the end of the night.

This year, the program is particularly exquisite: Birdy Nam Nam from France are going to play in the Club, and besides Justice and Daft Punk, they are considered as one of the best live acts there is. Their latest album, “Manual for successful rioting”, was a huge success and the following concerts all got excellent reviews. Do not miss them… you might regret it later!

Another big one in the program of the 2010 edition: Does it offend you, yeah? from England. Despite their enigmatic name, many consider them as the worthy successors of Prodigy; a band they are going to tour with through Australia very soon. There’s nothing better to boil over a heated audience than punk spirit that is maliciously hidden in machine-like electronic sound.

Zombie Nation is a Techno/Electro project of the German DJ and producer Florian Senfter (alias Splank). In 1999, his first maxi was released on the Gigolo Records label of the famous DJ Hell. In 2002, he founded his own label (Dekathlon Records). In 2007, the title “Lower State of Consciousness”, the fruit of a collaboration with the Canadian Tiga, toured the world. Today, Zombie Nation gives one of the most popular live performances around the nightspots of the entire world!

Like every year, the Rockhal will present as well the crème de la crème of Luxembourg's electro scene, this year with Hal Flavin, who will perform their first 2010 gig in Luxembourg at this festival, as well as Dirty Kid and CrackHoe.

Fans of electro music, make sure you don’t miss this indispensable event!

EDITORS

Club

One thing’s for sure: Editors have been the most impressive band of 2009. They continue their progression to the highest peaks while delivering high quality live performances. Come see them (again) on 26th April 2010, when they hit the Rockhal for the second time!

Three albums were enough for Editors to emerge as one of the last decade’s winning bands. They made no compromises or concessions. And yet the band distinguished itself among the best thanks to a totally unmistakable style – a mix of cold wave influences and sweeping indie rock –, but also with an absolutely amazing stage presence.

In 2009, when they released the album “On the light and on this evening” and the singles “Papillon”, Editors increased their music’s quality and the excellence of their compositions even a little more, leaving all other pretenders to the crown far behind. In 2010, Editors will continue touring Europe’s concert halls and a new date in Luxembourg has been fixed – get ready!

NENA

Main Hall

In the company of at least one parent with a valid admission ticket (father, mother), the children under 12 years (inclusive) have free admission to the concert of NENA. (Please do not forget to bring the ID of the child along with you and send a mail with the name of the child to info(at)eupenarena.com)

Some pop stars seem to be far away, but not Nena. She’s always been different from the others. On 29th April, she’ll present her greatest hits and songs from her new album at the Rockhal, live and directly.

As a school kid, Nena already sang in a new wave band, The Stripes. This girl from Hagen, Germany, was no punk, although she dreamt of a savage life where friendship is just as important as music, captivating and authentic music. Her first singles, “Nur geträumt”, became a big hit in 1982. Today, it is considered as a highlight of German new wave music. The following singles “99 Luftballons” sold one million copies only in the United States, where it remained in the charts for 23 weeks! All over the world, 22 million albums were sold.

Ever since, Nena has released one hit singles and successful album after the other, sold out tour after tour and regularly had to stop by at award ceremonies. She’s appeared in several movies and acted in a production of “Jedermann” in Zürich, Switzerland. She’s written children’s books, won awards and prizes – and still remained herself: a mother of four who lives in a happy relationship in Hamburg and only accepts to take part in projects which she’s really convinced of.

“Nena feat. Nena” and “Willst Du Mit Mir Gehn” were extraordinarily successful. This was also due to the artist’s stunning presence on stage – when the Olympic Stadium in Berlin was reopened in 2004, she ran one lap of honor after the other, singing to the cheering crowd. Life is a great adventure for her, and it always has some surprises in store. What she likes best is to do things no one would expect from her. In 2002, she recorded the club hit “Oldschool Baby” together with Westbam, the grandmaster of German electro. In 2004 followed “Bang Bang”, a house track in cooperation with Tok Tok. At the same time, Nena‘s band consists of confirmed rock musicians who’ve worked with Gun’n’Roses, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and Joan Jett. But Nena also cares for the youngest of her fans: as a mother of four, she has released eight wonderful records with children’s songs over the years.

Nena’s new studio album “Made In Germany” was released on 2nd October 2009. It contains thirteen fantastic pop songs which are incredibly modern and contemporary, good to dance to… and they definitely rock. Pop music at its finest, as usual. On 29th April, she’ll present songs from this album, the new singles “Du bist so gut für mich”, and all her hits at the Rockhal, so make sure you get your tickets in time!

Club

The German punk label celebrates its fifth anniversary and organises a high-class tour to mark this jubilee. Successively on stage: Rejected Youth, Obtrusive, Riot Brigade, Ashers, Ticking Bombs and Baretta Love. The date is fixed and the doors will open at 6 o’clock sharp!

The punk/hardcore/indie label was founded in Nuremberg in 2005 and this year, it celebrates its fifth anniversary on a very large scale. The grand itinerant tour they organize features not less than 5 bands from the own label… and one surprise guest.

Rejected Youth will be the undisputed headliner of this festival. They’ve been around for ten years and have played innumerable concerts all over Europe and also in the United States. Rejected Youth are still “the” constant German punk rock band. And even today, they are respected and idolized by numerous street punk bands who take them as an example.

At this festival, they’re supported by some true heavyweights, like Ashers for instance, a punk hardcore band from Boston featuring Mark Unseen of The Unseen and former members of Crash and Burn. By the way, they’ve just released a first, very explosive album.

Other bands that will be in on it: Riot Brigade and Obtrusive from Germany and Ticking Bombs from Sweden. Baretta Love from Germany have been booked as surprise guest, they’re the only band on the program that hasn’t signed on Concrete Jungle Records (yet).

GAETAN ROUSSEL

Club

Gaétan Roussel, the singer of Louise Attaque, takes the leap into the new adventures as a solo artist. His first album, “Ginger” was released on 15th March. The first singles, “Help myself”, is already on rotation at all radio stations and the congenial singer will be at the Rockhal Club on 5th May, 2010. Don’t miss!

He is the voice and face of Louise Attaque. Gaétan Roussel could have gone on pension and lived a happy life. It has to be said that with more than 2.5 million sold albums (which is a record in France!), this band completely changed the situation and modified the French audiovisual scene.

But this would mean you don’t know this passionate songwriter. After having worked, amongst others, with Bashung on his album “Bleu Pétrol” and with Vanessa Paradis on the unpublished “Il y a”, he will now soon release “Ginger”, an astonishing first album.

Gaétan Roussel changes all codes, breaks all barriers and this time, he does it to his heart’s content: he juggles with English pop (“Help myself” - first singles), folk music (“Mon nom”) and alternative rock (“Do you wanna dance”).

The new record is in perpetual movement and Gaétan Roussel starts a sneak attack on all those who expected a static chansonnier. That was his aim and he’s achieved his mission. Get ready to be surprised… and inspired!

PITBULL AND BAND

Main Hall

If you ask most outsiders about the origins of 'Crunk', they usually point to Atlanta, thanks to the pioneering efforts of artists like 'Lil Jon' and 'DJ Smurf'. Close, says up and coming Southern rapper Pitbull, but no dice. Crunk really started down at the bottom.
"Crunk really got started in Miami, with bass music," he said. "Crunk ain’t nothin’ but bass music slowed down. And bass music got started here in Miami, with 'Luke', 'Poison Clan', people like that. Miami is the New York of the South. And even after all the success we still get slept on, but that’s about to change."

And Pitbull is at the forefront of that change, rolling with the Crunk movement’s premier label - TVT Records - home to super producer/artist/impresario 'Lil Jon', as well as zany Dirty South duo 'Ying Yang Twins', who, between the two of them, have dominated the airwaves over the past two years. Pitbull, is on the way to following-up their success with his debut, M.I.A.M.I. (Money Is a Major Issue). The 23-year-old Cuban-American verbalist has more hardcore lyrics, diverse cultural influences and freestyle skills than most artists would not know what to do with. With that much in his corner, success is a given.

Part of that comes from his upbringing, not to mention his surroundings. Miami’s cultural landscape is one of the most cosmopolitan in the world and Pitbull draws on it’s rich environment for inspiration. "I’ve lived all around this place," he said. "That’s one thing people don’t realize about Miami -- we have all kinds of people down here. I have lived around people from both here and overseas. So early on I learned to appreciate different types of music."
Pitbull’s nickname belies the hunger and drive that he brings to his profession - making it to the top is more than just a goal; its an obsession.
Despite his relatively tender age living in Miami has given Pitbull as much life experience as someone twice his age. He got his culture early, almost before he even discovered Hip-Hop. His parents, both first generation Cuban immigrants had him memorize the poems of legendary Cuban poet, Jose Martí. This ritual instilled in him an early appreciation for the power of language, as well as the importance of his Cuban roots and looking beyond his own experience for inspiration.

While a lot of 'Sunshine State' (Miami) rappers focus their hip-hop attentions strictly below the Mason-Dixon line, the teenage Pitbull’s wide interests led him to classics like Nas "Illmatic" and G-Funk blueprints like "The Chronic" and "Doggystyle." Soon he was developing the freestyle skills that would later earn him fame, flooding the Miami streets with mixtapes (like his latest, "Unleashed Volume 3").
After missing connections with Irv Gotti - a chance meeting brought them into the same studio, but the planned recording session never happened - Pitbull turned to home base for his entry in the game. In the late 90s, he was tabbed by bass music legend Luke to flow over his hit single "Lollipop". " I am grateful for him, not just because "Lollipop" did mad business all through the south,” Pitbull says. “But because he helped me learn the ropes of the business."

Pitbull’s next stop was with the producing/management team of the Diaz brothers, which led to a working relationship with Lil Jon, and a freestyle slot on Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz’ double platinum album, Kings of Crunk. Both relationships culminated with co-production of Pitbull’s debut single “Culo”, which is heating up the charts throughout Florida and the South.

On the eve of his debut, Pitbull explains why he signed with TVT Records, “They let me know I could have my hand in the pot. That’s a good feeling, and it lets me know I’m going to have a long career in this game.”

ZOOT WOMAN

Club

Zoot Woman, a project of producer and remixer Stuart Price, aka Jacques Lu Cont, Thin White Duke, etc., is one of those bands that have turned electronic music into something special (again). With their mix of pop melodies and eighties-style electro beats, Zoot Woman have built their own sound which is recognizable among thousands! This concert will certainly have some surprises in store…

There’s no way of talking about Zoot Woman without mentioning the career of Stuart Price. During the nineties, he attracted attention with Les Rythmes Digitales, a project somewhere between synthie pop and trip hop. A little later, he formed Zoot Woman, his own electro band in which he plays the bass. The first album, “Living in a magazine”, was released in 2001.

Price now became the number one ally for different renowned artists such as Madonna (for whom he produced the album “Confessions on the dance floor”), The Killers (with their latest album, “Day & Age”) and Starsailor (he remixed “Four to the floor”!).

Beside Stuart Price, Johnny Blake largely contributes to the band’s character with his surprising and delicate voice. And last, but not least, Adam Blake gives the final touch to Zoot Woman. It’s the combination of these three geniuses that turns Zoot Woman into a rare and precious band whose live performances are always very impressive.

After an eponymous album in 2003, Zoot Woman are in full cry again in 2009 with their third album, which is named “Things are what they used to be”.

This concert will be exceptional on several levels, though. Not only will it be Zoot Woman’s first-ever appearance in Luxembourg, but also an opportunity to discover the new project of the former members of Minipli, called Plankton Waves. It’s going to be their first appearance on stage…
Last year was a very successful one for Minipli. They played at most of the festivals that took place in Luxembourg and the icing on the cake was the honor to represent Lorraine and Luxembourg at the Printemps de Bourges festival in France.
In 2010, they’ll be back under a new name but still as eager to surprise and entertain their listeners. New buzz in sight?

Later in the evening, Kuston Beater (who is best-known in Luxembourg for his powerful, yet subtle performances) will terminate the festivities with his relentless beats.

In short: prepare for a top-class electro event! And there are at least three good reasons for you to head to the Rockhal!

Transatlantic is an all-star band: Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Neil Morse (former Spock’s Beard), Pete Trewasas (Marillion) and Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) redefined the concept of progressive rock with the release of their album “The Whirlwind”. Do not miss them on 10th Mai, 2010, at the Rockhal Club!

“The Whirlwind” is like a novel by Tolstoy. It’s the “War and Peace” of progressive rock! These are the words that Neil Morse used to describe this luxury all-star band’s third album, which includes not less than four of the most influential musicians of the last twenty years of progressive rock.

Seven years after they announced the band’s winter rest, the dream team composed of Portnoy, Morse, Trewasas and Stolt is warming up the turbines of their Transatlantic again and releases its most perfected album. “The Whirlwind” is a 77-minute-long masterpiece divided into twelve chapters, and it will surely inspire all fans of progressive rock. This time, the musicians really show all of their courage and that they won’t let anyone pigeonhole them.
And Morse concludes: “I honestly think that this album is better than anything we could have done in the past!”

On 10th May 2010, you’ll have the opportunity to see this exceptional band on stage for a unique performance and a show that will certainly go down in the history of the Rockhal!

Club

They’re the English electro pop sensation of the last months and already considered as one of the “next big things“. New Young Pony Club will release their second album, “The Optimist” in March. It’s a little more pop and sweeter than its predecessor, but still has this little dance aspect which already is NYPC’s trade mark!

New Young Pony Club was formed in 2004 by the sublime, yet mysterious Tahita Bulmer. Their first EP, “Ice cream”, catapulted them to success. The limited edition of this record was sold out in only three days.

After a first tour together with Lily Allen and another one which was sponsored by the NME (with CSS and the Klaxons), they released their first album, “Fantastic Playroom” in July 2007. This electro album was a very danceable and energetic one and easily got classified in the British sales charts just after its release.

The second album, “The Optimist”, will be in stores on March 1st. The new song “Lost a girl” was made available online for free download in December and the three girls and two boys will go on a nice and long European tour in March.

The date for Luxembourg’s been fixed on May 12, 2010!

DEADMAU5

Club

A Deadmau5 is a Canadian mammal that has the particularity of living only at night, not to be confused with its anemic cousin from the south, a certain Mickey Mouse. On May 16, 2010, the mouse will come to the Rockhal Club for one of the most explosive electro nights ever…

This rare specimen was discovered in 2007 through the track “Faxing Berlin”, and Joel Zimmerman isn’t a laboratory mouse… he prefers the treadmill of the world’s night clubs. He was awarded for his talents as a composer and his peers elected him most remarkable producer of 2007. This North American animal shapes its productions between electro, progressive, techno and a whiff of trance.

Deadmau5 (pronounced: dead mouse…) is hard to classify, but the atmosphere, the energy and the simplicity of his style confer him a musical signature that is immediately recognizable and turns this specimen into one of the major species in the current evolution of electronic music.
In 2009, the album “For Lack Of A Better Name” was released and the singles “I Remember” (a huge success in the Netherlands) and “Ghosts ’n Stuff” (featuring Rob Swire, the singer of Pendulum, on the vocals) lead to worldwide triumph. (The download portal Beatport already listed Deadmau5’s tracks 14 times on the first spot of their Top 100 charts, which no other dance artist had ever achieved until that point.)

He has a reputation for energetic sets and now, Deadmou5 has become an accepted headliner together with Justice, Soulwax or Boysnoize. The mouse is nonchalantly wagging its tail in Great Britain’s sold out clubs.
In few words: When the cat’s away, the mice do play… So open up your ears, Deadmau5 has decided to make the entire planet dance and on May 16, 2010, the Rockhal’s Club will not escape the invasion of the mice....

JETHRO TULL - The 40th Anniversary Tour

Early in 1968, a group of young British musicians, born from the ashes of various failed regional bands gathered together in hunger, destitution and modest optimism in Luton, North of London. With a common love of Blues and an appreciation, between them, of various other music forms, they started to win over a small but enthusiastic audience in the various pubs and clubs of Southern England. The breakthrough came when they were offered the Thursday night residency at London’s famous Marquee Club in Wardour Street, Soho.

The early Jethro Tull released their first Blues-oriented album, This Was, in the latter part of 1968 before moving on to more home-grown and eclectic efforts in 1969 with Stand Up and a flutter of single releases, including Living In The Past, in the UK market.

Benefit, Aqualung, and Thick As A Brick followed and the band’s success grew internationally. Various band members came and went, but the charismatic front man and composer, flautist and singer Ian Anderson continued, as he does to this day, to lead the group through its various musical incarnations.

Jethro Tull were, by the mid-seventies, one of the most successful live performing acts on the world stage, rivalling Zeppelin, Elton John and even the Rolling Stones. Surprising, really, for a group whose more sophisticated and evolved stylistic extravagance was far from the Pop and Rock norm of that era.
With now some 30-odd albums to their credit and sales totalling more than 50 million, the apparently uncommercial Tull have continued over the next three decades to travel near and far to fans across the world.

After forty years at the bottom, at the top and various points in between, Tull are still performing typically more than a hundred concerts each year. Ian Anderson and Martin Barre remain at the centre of a group of sometimes changing but highly capable – indeed excellent – musicians. Currently, Doane Perry, veteran Tull drummer of some 24 years experience, together with John O’Hara on piano and accordion, and David Goodier on bass guitar are to be found in the line-up, delighting audiences and continuing the legacy of Tull’s music with its rich variety and depth of expression wherever fans, young and old, want to hear Rock, Folk, Jazz and Classical-inspired music for grown-ups.
