Review

Looking for the new Amy Winehouse? Forget Adele, forget Duffy, and forget Gabriella Cilmi. The last soul sister’s grown up in Massachusetts and is actually a soul brother. His name is Eli “Paperboy” Reed, and he’s a young, white, 26-year-old miracle. His last album, “Come and Get It”, seems to come straight from the sixties, from the archives of Stax records. Listening to Eli makes you feel like the ghosts of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and James Brown were resurrected at once. On 12th July, the Rockhal Club revives the sixties with ELI PAPERBOY REED.

Eli Reed’s father (a music critic) had an extensive record collection. As a boy, Eli explored the legends of soul and rhythm & blues. When he was 18 years old, Eli, who was born in Brookline, a suburb of Boston, started his pilgrimage to Clarksdale in the North West of Mississippi, the cradle of blues music. The legendary drummer Sam Carr showed him around in John Lee Hooker’s birthplace, assisting the young “Paperboy” where he could. With his guitar round his neck and a local band at his back, Eli toured the Delta’s juke joints, the blues clubs with the most demanding audience in the world.

One year later, he went to Chicago – the place where blues music went electric. Now he had already seven musicians who came to Boston with him, where he started recording, once a crooner, once raging like a storm. In the meantime, Eli “Paperboy” Reed is recording for Q Division (PIAS), where he has now released his remarkable album “COME AND GET IT”. It’s not surprising that big names are dropped if you take account of Eli Reed’s passionate vocals, his absolutely sharp guitar, and his incredible wind section. On 12th July, ELI PAPERBOY REED comes round with his band and his winds, and their untamable rhythm will set the Rockhal’s Club on fire!
