Review
Ever since the release of their first album “High/Low” in 1996 and the phenomenal success of the singles “Popular”, Nada Surf were influenced by different musicians, such as Lou Reed, Frank Black or the Flaming Lips. Their music evolves in a dark and fascinating universe where they reconcile punk, pop, grunge and rock. Nada Surf will present their new record “If I Had a Hi-fi” to their numerous fans in Luxembourg on July 13, 2010, at the Rockhal Club!
If there was a rock anthem which symbolizes the post Cobain nineties, it would without any doubt be Nada Surf’s powerful and brilliant “Popular”. This song remained on heavy rotation during years and even today, it is one of the most-broadcast titles on rock radio stations throughout the world.
It has to be said that Nada Surf had a nose for choosing this song because it became a world hit and effectively very popular… It simply electrified and galvanized young rockers who were still depressed after Nirvana left a huge vacuum in 1994. But Nada Surf’s rock story began quite a while before “Popular”. Daniel and Matthew met in high school and decided to form Nada Surf together with another mate after having played several years in a band named “The Cost Of Living”. Little later, the drummer left the band and Ira Elliott took over the sticks. Nada Surf was now complete and began its musical adventure with power pop inspired by punk rock and Leonard Cohen’s mystical lyrics.
In 1998, they released their second album, “The Proximity Effect”, which received rave reviews from the music press. Nevertheless, the band fell out with the unsatisfied label and became independent by publishing “The Proximity Effects” on their own label, MavDred Records. The album was released only in Europe. Despite all obstacles, Nada Surf didn’t lose heart and came back in 1999 with "North 6th Street" and went on releasing one album after the other, all of which were extremely energetic and intensive: “Let Go” in 2002, the spectacular “Live in Brussels”, and “Lucky” in 2008.
Without a doubt, these New Yorkers are one of the few bands in the world that are able to link Punk, Grunge Rock and Pop influences (sometimes even French ones…) in such an impressive way. While they take care of sustaining their live reputation, Nada Surf remain inside the circle of today’s trendiest rock bands. Their new album “If I Had a Hi-fi” is a compilation of cover songs and will at first be sold exclusively during the tour that begins in New York in March 2010. Later, it will be in stores in June 2010.
On July 13, 2010, prepare to celebrate Rock together with Nada Surf at the Rockhal. The fireworks will be unleashed at the Club…
