Review

Wye Oak is a young duo from Baltimore with a big sound. They will be in Europe soon to present their formidable catalogue of moody, tender and beautifully blustery rock songs. Prepare for a promising Showcase at the Rockhalcafe on 18 November 2011.

Wye Oak has fleeting glimpses of outside influences like Sonic Youth or Fleetwood Mac but they manage the exciting achievement of sounding familiar yet impossible to pin down. The style of their music can be best described as 21st-century folk music, mixed with dense shoegaze guitars, nearly melodic rhythms, and impeccable splashes of electronic colour.

The band has been on and off the radar for quite a bit now, but the sheer musical brilliance that the duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack deliver with their new album called “Civilian” could be their chance to hit the big time.

Jenn Wasner sums up the meaning of the album saying, “this collection of songs is called Civilian because I believe everyone wants to be normal, but no one truly is.” “Their songs are about aloneness (the positive kind), loneliness (the horrible kind), moving on, and letting go (of people, places, and things),” lyricist/guitarist Jenn Wasner reveals.

Live, they are a remarkable as singer-guitarist Jenn Wasner lends their songs an air of mystery, while multi-instrumentalist Andy Stack essentially does the work of an entire backing band, playing drums and keyboards on stage simultaneously.

Come to see Wye Oak in the relax setting of the Rockhalcafe on 18 November 2011, a place to meet people and discover new artists. Don’t forget: the entrance is free!
