Review
There aren’t many bands that sound as soothing as Yuko. The four Flemings that create heavy postrock will be performing a Showcase at the Rockhalcafé on 18 May. With their banjo, cello, piano and even a coffee grinder, they are performing music to dream on.
Singer and songwriter Kristof Deneijs has a history in composing film music. That background gives Yuko its passionate feel. Warm and dreamy sounds combined with fragments of electronic. Thank God the band is not afraid to disturb their lovely indie folk with some exploding post rock: Radiohead meets Sigur Rós!
Yuko’s debut record, released in 2008 For Times when Ears are Sore immediately won the hearts of critics both in Belgium and abroad. The press totally praised it, calling it “a beautiful autumnal album full of introvert songs” and praising its “magical melancholy” as well as “childlike innocence: naïve but never stupid, charming but never banal”.
Their new album As If We Were Dancing will be released on 11 April. This record shows a more catchy sound than its forerunner. Frontman Kristof Deneijs says the following about it: “it is a dance record, but the kind you dance to in your room".
Yuko’s concerts at festivals like Eurosonic, Pukkelpop or Crossing Border did not go unnoticed, nor did Yuko’s support acts for M83, Under Byen, and Ladytron. As a live band, Yuko already established a certain reputation at venues in the BENELUX. Their Showcase at the Rockhalcafé on 18 May will be more of an intimate gig but nonetheless a must for every post-rock fan.
