Review

In 2011, the temple of amplified music is going to host the gods of the electronic Olympus: The Chemical Brothers! From the top of their altar, and with their already legendary new album “Further”, the two heroes from Manchester will release their thunderstorm of beats upon the Rockhal.

For those who’ve never been at a Chemical Brothers concert, it‘s hard to imagine the talent of these two DJs and their almost monstrous ability to make the crowd enter a trance. This is more than just a rave: the Chemical Brothers catapult thousands of people to the limit of unconsciousness with their almost subliminal images and their hallucinatory sound.

The Chemical Brothers’ odyssey began in Manchester in 1989. They were hip hop fans and art students when curly-haired Ed Simons met Tom Rowlands, who seemed to come out of “Alice in Wonderland” (playing the part of the magic mushroom eating caterpillar). Their first objective was to hit the techno scene. From the first, very explosive album “Exit Planet Dust” to “Push the button” (2005), from “Dig Your Own Hole” (1997) to the excellent “Surrender” (1999), the Chemical Brothers went down in history for playing 15 years at the world’s best dance floors and festivals. Their audience grew with hits such as “Galvanize”, “Setting suns” or “Hey boy Hey girl”, and they have just as many fans in the rock scene as in the electronic area. Through cooperations with famous musicians such as Noel Gallagher and Richard Ashcroft, their aggressive, powerful style and their unique oriental samples, they’ve written one of the most epical chapters of electronic music.

On 8th June 2010, The Chemical Brothers added one more chapter to their glorious history… On “Further”, which is Tom Rowlands’ and Ed Simons’ seventh album, they left out all dispensable features in order to concentrate on what’s essential: a mythical, 50-minute trip in 8 acts. The first singles “Snow” severely increased the tempo with a contagious bass line and a never-ceasing beat. The machine is in motion and since “Escape Velocity”, the Chemical Brothers simply ignore what’s fashionable and return to their first love: completely ecstatic techno music full of endlessly increasing beats and psychic depths such as in “Horse Power”.

2011 is starting with a celebration… on 13th January, the Chemical Brothers will only have to push a few buttons to make the Rockhal and its audience enter mythology…
