Review
After the band split up in 2005, The Get Up Kids, who were without any doubt the role model of an entire wave of emo bands during the nineties, will present their new album “There are rules” at the Rockhal Club on 1st October 2011.
In the mid-nineties, a new generation of pop and punk bands arises and The Get Up Kids are part of it. The release of 1998 album “Something To Write Home About” triggers the band’s interplanetary success story. Several tours and albums follow. In 2005, The Get Up Kids decide to end their career, thinking they’ve reached the end of their history. But after the years of separation, the band has all but grown old. The quality of their music is unaltered, the arrangements are just as brilliant and their sound remains flawless.
They dropped the emo/punk elements present on the preceding albums and replaced them with a simple acoustic guitar (we all remember "Campfire Kansas", "Overdue" or "I'll catch you"). The Get Up Kids have grown up and oriented themselves towards a punk/indie/emo sound. Not unlike many current English bands, the U.S. quintet has started a time travel. No more pop emo, they’ve turned a new page. Nevertheless, the band didn’t lose its charm! They’ve become more mature, spreading joy, freshness and inspiration. The Get Up Kids don’t forget their roots, which can be heard on “Shatter Your Lungs”. Their new album contains a collection of 12 songs which are surprising and familiar at a time, composed by a band that was reborn and doesn’t look back. The Get Up Kids version 2011 is a crew of good old friends who were away far too long but who never forgot how to write catchy melodies on a piece of music paper together.
