Review

Vampire Weekend were 2008’s big pop discovery. With their New York rock spiced up with African ingredients, they turned the music business upside down from the moment they released their first, eponymous album. The public and the critics hailed them and today, they’re back with their new album “Contra”, which will finally establish them as one the most important bands of the last decade. On 17 June, 2010, and for the very first time in Luxembourg, the Rockhal Club greets VAMPIRE WEEKEND for one of this summer’s most inevitable rock events in the Greater Region …

Formed at Columbia University (New York) in 2006, Vampire Weekend quickly made it to a privileged position in the universe of American independent rock with their excellent, African-influenced first album (Vampire Weekend, 2008).

Some bands preserve methods that have lead them to success before, but others take a totally different path. For their second opus, Vampire Weekend didn’t choose any of these options, they simply turned the code of rock upside down once again. “Holiday”, “Run” or the first singles “Cousins” already seem like future Vampire Weekend classics: they are dynamic, inventive songs with galvanic rhythms which are influenced by ska, exotic music and even electronic music, every now and then. The guitars are sometimes sour and sometimes sweet, compositions full of flavor tickle our taste buds, we are far away from the pre-formatted rock which producers take out of their freezer every now and then …

With “Contra”, Ezra Koenig and his band propose an outstanding masterpiece which combines rock, Oriental and African music. This experimental album is a veritable mix of styles, a rare jewel for our senses; it’s the precursor of a new genre which is full of colors, flavors and influences! And just to increase the thrill of anticipation, Vampire Weekend went on an 18-month tour after the release of this album. They’ve already hit the biggest festivals and the world’s most legendary concert halls...

On 17 June, 2010, the Rockhal’s Club is going to smell of sulfur and ginger… VAMPIRE WEEKEND are in the house, don’t miss out on this concert!
