Review

Agnes Obel is a name you can expect to hear a lot of in the near future. She has been quietly winning a devoted fan base with her debut album, “Philharmonics” and now she will be paying a visit to the Rockhal on 21 November 2011. Known for her “do-it-yourself” attitude towards music, she writes, plays, sings, records and produces all material on her own.

Born in Copenhagen and currently living in Berlin, Agnes Obel’s chamber folk has been praised worldwide. Critics hailed her debut album “Philharmonics” and compared Agnes to the likes of PJ Harvey, Joanna Newsom, and Roy Orbison. The album topped the charts in Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium and in France where it was certified Gold. Publications like Le Monde and Le Figaro prominently featured Agnes as a new artist to watch.

Agnes Obel possesses the rare gift of a songbird's voice. Play the song "Just So" to anyone in Germany and they'll tell you it's the music from the Deutsche Telekom television advertisement. It's the kind of exposure many artists would die for, or the kind of publicity an independent spirit might condemn. Yet isn't it intriguing how a few bars of music can seep into our consciousness and set us off wondering where they came from?

The Philharmonics record is a masterpiece of lovely, graceful solitude although you can't help to think that this is not an album of sun but of twilight, a mysterious calm that settles as darkness moves in. In her songs, she manages to meld different moods and atmospheres, the perfect formula for a promising live show.

Now on 21 November 2011, the internationally acclaimed songwriter and composer Agnes Obel will pay a visit to the Rockhal for the first time and enchant the audience in Luxembourg with her soothing yet dusky voice.
