Review
The British trip-hop pioneers Morcheeba will be back in Luxembourg this year. They will perform at the Rockhal Club on 18 July 2011 as a part of their European tour meant to promote their most recent release, “Blood like Lemonade”. The album marks a return to the band’s first albums, being their most introspective work so far.
Morcheeba made its debut on the British music stage in the mid 1990s, when the Godfrey brothers recruited Skye Edwards as vocalist, during an unplanned meeting at a party. The band’s debut album, Who Can You Trust? was released in 1996 and fitted smoothly into the current trip-hop genre of this time. Instrumentation was based mainly around piano, electric guitar and DJ scratching.
In 2003, Skye Edwards left Morcheeba because of musical differences with the other band members. Brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey continued, but the group’s signature voice was gone. Seven years later the three had dinner, got tipsy, and decided to reform. Now the darlings of down-tempo, Morcheeba, are back with their seventh album Blood Like Lemonade. This record marks the welcome return of Skye on vocals.
Blood Like Lemonade is the album they’ve been searching for all these years, one that takes the essence of earlier classics like Who Can You Trust? and Big Calm, and transports it to exotic new places. At its heart are the band’s trademark oozing downtempo trip-hop grooves, embellished with colourful instruments and topped off with Skye’s intimately soulful vocals.
If you want to experience the unique laidback charm of Morcheeba live, you should highlight the 18 July in your calendar for a memorable show at the Rockhal.
