MOHA LA SQUALE
Attention Phenomenon! For four months now, every Sunday, a name makes more and more noise among rap listeners. Moha La Squale publishes every weekend on his Facebook page a clip of a new song. And every week, the craze is a little bigger (over 80 million views) Moha breaks the screen with his inhabited expressions and extraordinary charisma. A rap of total sincerity, where he reveals his life in a raw way, without makeup and without artifice. Moha comes from the street and recalls the street and its dangers, the street he knows, the street he has surveyed since his earliest childhood.
Maz has been around for the better of a year now, creating quite a sensation at the 2017 Screaming Fields Festival where he won a great number of distinctions, after stunning the audience and convincing the jury. His debut album "Immortalisation" was released to great praise at a sold-out Rockhal Floor on March 2018.
It is a soaking with a rich variety of styles from old school boom bap to the newest trap wave and all their subcategories, the different sounds and moods referring to the many music influences of the young artist, who is inspired by artists such as Wisdom, Token, Eminem or Ed Scissor. Not shy about his endeavours, Maz is reaching for the stars with his debut album or as he puts it "loving the idea of being able to reach immortality through art".
MNNQNS from Rouen, France, were brought together by their shared tastes in post-punk and pubs. Taking influence from heavyweights like The Fall, Television and Sonic Youth, MNNQNS are a compelling force of tightly woven guitars, enveloping feedback and singer Adrian D’Epinay’s deadpan, at times sermonic vocals.
Although MNNQNS like to remind their listeners that the basis to all of their creation is pop, it’s sometimes hard to believe when they breakout into drones and frenetic, repetitive guitar lines. The band says they like to take their ideas to the extreme. When they’re pop, they’re really pop. When they’re punk, they’re really punk. But these shifts happen within the space of a mood swing, the confines of one song: a mix of elements, condensed, but still distinct. MNNQNS waste no time in forming a connection with the listener, both sonically and emotionally.
Bewitching arrangements, warm low-pitched vocal samples, and rousing percussions are Napoleon Gold’s favorite tools when producing his electronic tracks. He has played over one hundred performances around the world, opening for acts such as London Grammar, Glass Animals, SOHN, Son Lux, and many more.
Joined on stage by a drummer, Napoleon Gold gains in intensity and character when experienced live: the mix between electronic sounds, keyboards, percussions, and subtle improvisations make each show a unique experience. He finished producing and recording his first Electro and Hip-Hop influenced EP, projected to release later this year.
“He’s the future,” – that’s how BBC Radio 1 DJ and tastemaker Mistajam described XamVolo. It’s a fair assessment. In the last 12 months, the 23-year-old artist has risen to the attention of critics and music fans the world over thanks to his impressionist reimaginings of neo-soul, jazz and pop. He’s played Glastonbury, sold out a headline London show, and been compared with everyone from D’Angelo to Anderson Paak. Now, he’s on the cusp of releasing an inventive concept EP, with the promise of a debut album titled ‘All the Sweetness on the Surface’ to follow quickly after...
Cuco is a 20-year old self-produced Chicano solo artist from Hawthorne, CA. Cuco, born Omar Banos, first began playing music at the age of 8 years old. Starting with guitar, moving on to learning bass, keys, drums, trumpet, french horn, and mellophone all before the age of 15. After teaching himself Ableton at 16, Cuco was eager to start independently releasing his own music once finishing high school. In Summer of 2016, Cuco released his first mixtape Wannabewithu — a collection of teenage heartbreak over abstract chords, lo fi synths, ambient guitars, punchy drums, and lead trumpets that resonated with thousands of music lovers everywhere. Mere months later at the top of 2017, Cuco welcomed his newfound fans, or “Cuco Pebbles,” with a follow up mixtape Songs4u. The release of his first bilingual track “Lo Que Siento” has moved the needle tremendously with over 11 million Spotify streams and counting. Having only played So-Cal DIY house shows until March of 2017, Cuco has had a sold out touring streak since. With the recent drop of his EP Chiquito and a busy 2018 touring schedule featuring appearances at Coachella, Governors Ball, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits it’s looking like a life-altering year for Hawthorne’s Cuco.
Damiano alias Mudaze started his project in early December 2015. The date marks the beginning of a new attempt to look for a music genre where he can fetch all his influences. He collected important live experience while being part of a few rock, pop and punk bands in the local scene. Recently, he worked one year as a DJ. Excited about the connection between jazz, classic and electronic music, what passionates him, and where Mudaze distinguishes himself from others; constantly busy extending his own repertoire.
Enter TheColorGrey (a.k.a. Grey – °1994) from Antwerp, Belgium. A 23 year old urban singer/rapper/songwriter/producer of Belgian-Congolese origin whose English raps and sung harmonies combine a tight flow with smooth, laidback vibes, soulful beats and thoughtful lyrics. His self-produced music is a very personal blend of hip hop, new soul, blue jazz, cool R&B and urban pop, with touching melodies that often harbour slightly dark or melancholic undertones.
Based in Birmingham, England, Mahalia is Mahalia Burkmar, an alt-R&B/soul singer and songwriter who counts Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill among her biggest influences. A native of Leicestershire, she started writing songs and playing the guitar as a preteen. Burkmar drew the interest of major record labels by the age of 13, and released her first collection, Head Space EP, in mid-2012. After taking some time to finish school and hone her sound, Mahalia re-emerged in 2015 on Rudimental’s single “We the Generation,” and performed with the group on Later… with Jools Holland. Her second EP, Never Change, followed that December. In 2016, Burkmar had an acting role in the U.K. crime film Brotherhood and released her debut album, Diary of Me, on Asylum Records UK, a division of Atlantic Records. She followed it up in 2017 with appearances on festival stages in the U.K. and a series of collaborative singles, including “Hold On” featuring Buddy, the Maths Time Joy-produced “No Pressure,” and in early 2018, “Proud of Me” featuring Little Simz. ~ Marcy Donelson
Despite growing up in the same picturesque village in Hertfordshire, Chris Davids and Liam Ivory aka Maribou State customarily ignored each other at school, but discovered their shared passion for music when they both went to University.Since then they have steadily built a glowing international reputation via a string of well-loved EPs and a fistful of remixes (including Kelis, Ultraísta, Fatboy Slim and Lana Del Rey) since 2011. Plaudits from the electronic press have flowed thick and fast alongside support from radio heavyweights: Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens, Annie Mac, B. Traits, Pete Tong and Gilles Peterson amongst others.
Melancholic and gentle, then demanding and powerful, Soia’s vocals oscillate between Soul and Electronic Hip Hop, dancing effortlessly over the Dilla-esque beats and beautiful harmonization of Mez. Soia’s lyrics are engagingly weird – all sorts of creatures, real and imagined, appear: bipolar porcupines, intangible tigers, fractal spirits, roaming deer… The two Viennese musicians first collaborated for their 2011 single ‘Obtaining’, which received love from blogs such as Moovmnt, Okayplayer and BamaLoveSoul, and was featured on radio shows and mixes all over the world. They released their Neo Soul oriented album ‘Mood swings’ on the Philadelphia based label ‘Record Breakin’’.
